Tolerance Of Different Tea Trees To Low Temperature

2022-07-23 15:41:42

Generally speaking, tea trees are not particularly frost resistant. When the temperature is lower than minus 5 degrees, it will basically suffer from severe freezing damage. However, there are still some differences in the tolerance of different tea varieties to low temperature. Here we talk about the minimum critical temperature, which is a concept to distinguish the low temperature tolerance of different varieties.

Under normal circumstances, the tolerance of shrub-type tea species is stronger than that of tree-type tea trees, and the low-temperature tolerance of medium and small-leaf tea trees is stronger than that of large-leaf tea trees. For example, the Longjing species and Qimen species in the shrub type can basically withstand the low temperature of minus 12~16 degrees. And the arbor-type large-leaf species in Yunnan will suffer severe freezing damage as long as it is below minus 6 degrees.

Of course, in different growth periods, the tolerance of tea trees to low temperature is also different. To put it simply, tea trees are most afraid of frost damage in the seedling stage, young age and senescence stage, and tea trees in the adult stage are more resistant to frost damage. At the same time, the new shoots and buds of tea trees are less susceptible to freezing damage, while the older leaves are more susceptible to freezing damage. Therefore, we see that every year before the spring tea goes on the market, once severe freezing damage is encountered, it will have a great impact on the quality and yield of tea leaves, and will cause great losses to tea farmers.
